Police reports: when to call and how to get a copy

Why a report helps, and how to request one afterwards.

4 min read

A police report is an independent record of what happened. Insurers often ask for it, and it can help if the other driver changes their story.

When to call

  • Anyone is injured
  • There's significant damage
  • A driver seems impaired, is uninsured or leaves the scene
  • The drivers disagree about what happened

Getting a copy

  1. Ask the officer for the report number and the agency's name.
  2. Request the report from that agency, often online, usually after a few days.
  3. Read it for errors and ask how to correct them if needed.
