Claim guides / At the scene
What to do after a car accident
The steps in order, from the first minute to the next day.
In the moments after a crash, it's hard to think clearly. Following the same steps every time protects people first, then your claim.
At the scene
- Check for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911.
- If it's safe and the cars can move, get out of traffic; turn on hazard lights.
- Call the police if anyone is hurt, the damage is significant or the other driver won't cooperate. Some states require a report for crashes above a damage threshold.
- Exchange information with the other driver(s).
- Take photos of the scene, the vehicles and the other driver's documents.
- Get names and phone numbers of witnesses.
What not to do
- Don't admit fault or argue about it; stick to facts
- Don't leave the scene of a crash involving injury or damage
- Don't agree to settle privately on the spot without understanding the damage
The same day or next
- Get checked by a doctor, even if you feel fine; some injuries appear later
- Notify your insurer as your policy requires
- Start a claim journal: every call, name, date and claim number
- Find out if your state requires you to file a crash report with the DMV
