Claim guides / The claim
Working with an insurance adjuster
What adjusters do, and how to keep the process moving.
An adjuster investigates the claim, assesses the damage and decides what the insurer will pay under the policy. Clear, organized communication helps.
Good habits
- Keep every communication in writing where you can, or follow calls with a short email summary
- Send documents promptly and keep copies
- Ask for estimates and decisions in writing
- Ask which policy language a decision is based on
Recorded statements
The other driver's insurer may ask for a recorded statement. You can ask what it covers, take time to prepare, and stick to facts. If you were seriously injured or fault is disputed, you may want legal advice first.
