Choosing a repair shop

Insurer-recommended shops, your own choice, and repair estimates.

4 min read

Insurers may suggest shops in their network, which can make the process smoother. In many states, you have the right to choose your own repair shop. Check your state's rules and your policy.

Questions to ask a shop

  • Do you work with my insurer, and how do supplements for hidden damage work?
  • Will you use original equipment (OEM) or aftermarket parts?
  • Do you calibrate driver assistance sensors after repairs?
  • What warranty do you give on the repair?

Before you pick up the car

  • Check the repair in daylight
  • Make sure warning lights are off and systems work
  • Get the final invoice and parts list
