Hi there,
This issue's claim step: the total loss offer
When repairs would cost more than a car is worth, insurers usually pay its actual cash value instead. The first offer is based on a valuation report, and it's fair to check it.
- Ask for the full valuation report, including the comparable vehicles used.
- Check that the comparables match your car's year, trim, options and mileage.
- Gather your own evidence: local listings, service records, recent new tires or repairs.
- Reply in writing with your evidence and the amount you think is fair.

This issue's safety tip
Keep reflective triangles and a small flashlight in the trunk. After dark on a highway shoulder, being seen is the best protection you have.
Reader question
"Should I file with my insurer or the other driver's?" In general terms: your own collision coverage is often faster but you pay the deductible (which may be recovered later); the other driver's insurer avoids the deductible if they accept fault but can take longer. Our filing guide explains more.
