Getting your deductible back (subrogation)
How your insurer recovers costs from the at-fault driver, and how you can benefit.
If you use your own collision coverage after a crash someone else caused, your insurer may seek repayment from the at-fault driver's insurer. This is called subrogation.
What it means for you
- If recovery succeeds, you may get some or all of your deductible back
- It can take months
- Ask your adjuster whether subrogation is being pursued and to tell you the result
